Trivandrum being the capital city of Kerala has had many unique geographical advantages and other special features.  This city comprises of four macro-regional urban systems.  The economic and urban space was structured and has developed under these emerging urban areas over the years.  They are in the process of being integrated and interlinked, however, at the lower level; the urban system is less integrated because of the inadequate linkages between the urban centers and their hinterlands.

The economic base of the 4 emerging urban centers of Neyyattinkara, Nedumangad, Kattakada and Vizhinjam and the weakness of the urban system is characterized by a significantly weak primary, secondary and a bloated tertiary sector.

While India’s modern urbanization has its roots in the colonial period when the British selected Kolkota, Mumbai and Chennai as regional trading centers and fortified ports, Trivandrum enjoyed a particular position as a major administrative center in the southern most part of the country from earlier times.  Chennai was fortified as early as 1640, Mumbai in 1664 and Kolkota in 1690.  Mumbai had the situational advantage of being the closest of all Indian ports to Britain and Kolkota lay on the margin of densely populated, intensively farmed Gangetic plain and most productive hinterland in the east.  Lasting evidence of Britain’s impact on urban India is found in the above three Presidency towns of India.

In the state of Kerala, even though major developments have taken place before independence, only in the cities of Cochin, Trivandrum and Kozhikode was these developments more prominent.  When considering the present developments in real estate Trivandrum has a prominent place in the world tourism map, and the possibility of a tourist boom has resulted in phenomenal value appreciation in the areas adjacent to the beach resorts and other areas with tourism potential.
